Extra care schemes
Extra care schemes are an affordable housing option where social landlords offer purpose-built accommodation, with our teams providing a flexible on-site home care service to residents.
Providing extra care
The ‘extra’ in extra care housing generally means access to care services that can respond quickly to a client’s changing needs, delivering both planned and unplanned care and providing an emergency response when needed. Because extra care can adapt to changing needs over time, eventually providing a realistic alternative to a care home, it can be a “home for life” and a popular choice for many older people.
Planned care
When working in an Extra care scheme, you would be responsible for delivering both planned and unplanned care. Planned care is like home care - it’s offered to individuals who have been assessed as needing it and involves personal care and practical support. Planned care can also include supporting clients to take part in communal activities that are available within the extra care scheme, such as creative sessions, light physical exercise and social events.
Unplanned care
Client’s care needs can sometimes change suddenly and, when the unexpected happens, you and your colleagues will be nearby to respond and arrange the care that people need. Sometimes emergencies happen and clients find themselves in a situation where they might have suffered an injury, or their health has suddenly declined. When this happens, you’ll stay calm and help them to feel reassured and safe before the emergency services arrive.
