Our people

Our people are special. Whether they’re on the front line as a care assistant or in a service or central support teams, they pull together to support people with kindness and respect. Here are some of their stories.

Real people.

Real stories.

Leanne Gardiner

Care assistant of the year

“When I found out that I’d won this award, I was overwhelmed! It’s nice to be appreciated for what I’ve done. I’ve been a care assistant for such a long time – I just never knew that people thought of me this way. It’s great to see care assistants getting recognition like this. I got into care because my mum has MS, so I’ve always looked after mum and I was brought up with nurses and carers around me and so I knew it was what I wanted to do. I also like the flexibility. Care work suits my family and lifestyle. I start work at 7am and finish at 3pm, just in time to pick up my little one from school. I work six days a week and have Sundays off.”

Joanne Hooton

Head of paediatric nursing

“Since qualifying in 2003, I've worked in a variety of settings. I started my career here as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in community complex care and after 12 months I was promoted to Head of Paediatric Nursing for the complex division. I truly feel we’re the leaders in delivering the best standards of paediatric complex care. We deliver bespoke training and hands-on sessions to care assistants that are tailored to meet our client's needs. The training packages, delivered by our complex community nurses, consist of theory training and practical training. We make sure everyone within the care team is equipped with the best possible skills and knowledge to deliver the safest standard of high-quality care to our clients.”

Claire Bulmer

Care coordinator of the year - 2022

“My role is so rewarding and no two days are ever the same. I complete care rotas and try to ensure clients have continuity. I also help social care get their care packages into place through our company. Knowing our clients care is being met and the care assistants are happy keeps me motivated. It’s nice to know I help even if it’s a small part. When I won the care coordinator of the year award, I couldn’t quite believe it! My first thought was – ‘are you sure?’. I was very shocked. We get a lot of support from City & County, and the Care Heroes Awards are a nice touch; it’s good to know that we can nominate someone and recognise their efforts.”

Carol Conway

Care assistant

“I’m Carol and I’ve worked for Constance Care (City & County) for one and half years. Some of the most rewarding things about being a care assistant in the community is the difference we make to people’s lives. There are so many different things that make it satisfying. I enjoy it. It fits in with my life and I gain a wee bit of wisdom every day chatting to the elderly community – their stories are awesome and inspiring. Being able to give your clients the support they need to live at home day-to-day allows you to see the results of your hard work. We see the harsh realities of people struggling to overcome illness or disability and to make that little bit of difference makes it all worthwhile.”
